HOW TO: REPLACING EAR PADS ON PRO HEADPHONES

After several years of wear and tear, or even shorter periods of particularly intensive use, replacing the ear pads on PRO headphones can bring a real boost in terms of sound. The pad material can deteriorate over time, with sweat and dust causing further detrimental effects. Consequently, your over-ear headphones may no longer perfectly surround your ears and fail to provide an acoustic seal. This can have a negative effect on sound quality – once air is allowed to escape from the space between ear pad and ear, bass response is impaired. Low-frequency sounds are then no longer directed straight into your ear, some of them get lost on the way. An ear pad’s foam filling can deteriorate over time as well, losing its shape and becoming softer. When this happens, the ear pads are subject to greater compression during use of the headphones, affecting the sound across the entire mid-range and bass areas. In both cases, worn-out ear pads can result in clearly audible differences in sound quality, noticeably upsetting the fine balance between bass, mid-range and treble.

Replacing ear pads on the PRO Classics

You’ll need:

  • a hair dryer (for DT 770/880/990 PRO only)
  • a flat-head screwdriver or handle of a kitchen fork
  • new ear pads compatible with your model of headphones
Step 1: Pull off old ear pads

First adjust the headband to the largest size possible.
DT 770/880/990 PRO: Then pull the ear pad over the rim of the housing.

DT 1770/1990 PRO & Custom Series: Carefully detach the ear pad from the retaining ring.

Step 2: Remove clamping ring

Now carefully remove the clamping ring by inserting the screwdriver between clamping ring and housing or the handle of a kitchen fork between clamping ring and foam disc. Now remove the old foam disc. If there is any dust or dirt underneath, carefully blow this away or wipe clean with a dry microfibre cloth.

Step 3: Insert new foam disc

Now insert the new foam disc. Then reinsert the clamping ring so that the nose aligns precisely with the recess in the housing and press carefully into position.

Step 4: Attach the new ear pads

DT 770/880/990 PRO: The last step can be a little trickier. First warm up the rubber rim of the new ear pad using a hair dryer (but not at the hottest setting!). The heat will make the rubber rim more flexible. Now, starting on one side, gradually pull the ear pad over the edge of the housing. Once you have pulled the rim over on all sides, rotate the ear cup to check it has been attached correctly.

DT 1770/1990 PRO & Custom Series: Thread the rubber rim of the new ear pad over the groove at the top of the ear cup. Rotate the ear pad in the direction of the arrow until the rim is completely behind the retaining ring.
