What is In-ear monitoring?
In-ear monitoring is an advanced audio system that provides musicians with individualised and interference-free sound transmission. While conventional stage monitors send the sound to the musicians via loudspeakers, IEMs transmit the signal directly to the ear.
This ensures clear and controlled reproduction, regardless of stage noise or room acoustics. The passive sound insulation of the in-ear headphones also protects your hearing, as the volume can be individually adjusted.
Wireless vs. wired IEM – the most important differences
There are two main types of in-ear monitoring system:
Wired IEM
Advantages:
- Stable, latency-free audio transmission
- No batteries or radio frequencies required
- Cheaper than wireless systems
Disadvantages:
- Limited freedom of movement due to use of a cable
Wireless in-ear monitoring (radio)
Advantages:
- Maximum freedom of movement, ideal for singers and active musicians
- Professional radio transmission (UHF or 2.4 GHz) ensures reliable performance
Disadvantages:
- Minimal time offset (latency) – but usually only 2–5 ms and unproblematic for live performances
- More expensive than wired systems
- Battery-dependent, so regular recharging or replacement is necessary
By the way, wireless stage IEMs work via professional radio frequencies (UHF or 2.4 GHz) – not via Bluetooth. Bluetooth headphones have a high latency and are not suitable for live monitoring.
How does in-ear monitoring work?
Wired systems
- The audio signal is transmitted directly by cable from the mixing console or a headphone amplifier to the musician – often via a small belt pack with volume control
Wireless systems
- Transmitter: Transmits the audio signal from the mixing console
- Receiver (body pack): Receives the signal and forwards it to the in-ear headphones
- In-ear headphones: Convert the signal into sound so that the musician hears the mix precisely
Why modern in-ear monitoring is better than classic stage monitors
- Direct sound transmission without the influence of room acoustics or stage noise
- Less sound distortion compared to stage monitors
- Clear, detailed sound, regardless of the position on stage
