How does Bluetooth® work?

But how does your favorite song, the new podcast episode, or a call from your best friend get from the device – such as a smartphone, laptop, or sound system in the living room – to your ear without cables? And preferably without compromising sound quality? This is made possible by Bluetooth®.

Anyone using modern devices can hardly avoid Bluetooth® nowadays. Originally developed in the 1990s to transmit data over short distances via radio, the technology has since evolved and improved significantly.

The current version, Bluetooth® 5.4, transmits audio data over a distance of up to 15 meters with a data rate of 990 kbit/s, depending on the codec used. Location transmission services are accurate to within a few centimeters. The transmission is carried out via a microchip with a transmitter and receiver unit, as well as suitable software to control the data transfer. If both devices – for example, smartphone and headphones – have these prerequisites, they can be paired quickly and easily. And then you can start enjoying wireless music.

Finding the perfect wireless Bluetooth® headphones

So much for the theory. But which headphones are right for me?

Bluetooth® headphones come in various types and price ranges. Depending on your requirements and taste, there should be something for everyone. Compared to traditional wired models, no compromises need to be made in terms of sound quality.

For those who prefer small and handy headphones, True Wireless In-Ear models like the AMIRON 300 are the best choice. This model is easy to transport, almost invisible, and ergonomically fit perfectly into the ear canal. This creates a closed system that effectively isolates external noise and makes music or calls clearly audible even at low volumes. The secure fit of the small earbuds makes them the ideal companion in everyday life. AMIRON 300 offers Active Noise Cancelling and is therefore perfect for commuting to work. However, if you prefer to be aware of your surroundings while jogging or on your way to work, you should opt for Open-Ear headphones like our VERIO 200.

If you are not a fan of in-ears, you can choose an over-ear model like the AVENTHO 300 which encloses the entire ear.

Your suitable Bluetooth® headphones: The agony of choice

Which model you ultimately choose depends mainly on your personal taste and requirements. In addition to comfortable wearing comfort, weight, stylish design, workmanship, and good sound quality, there are a few points to consider when buying Bluetooth® headphones:

Nowadays, almost all current devices like smartphones, laptops, or hi-fi systems have a Bluetooth® feature. However, we still recommend checking in advance whether your desired headphones and your device use the same codecs to ensure the best possible sound quality.

Unlike wired headphones, wireless devices run on a battery that needs to be charged regularly (usually via a USB cable). The battery life varies depending on usage and headphone model. For example, if a device is in standby mode, the battery lasts longer than in active use. If the device also has the Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) standard, consumption can be further reduced. Modes such as Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) can, however, reduce battery life.

Wireless Bluetooth® headphones offer more freedom of movement, but the range of the technology is limited and can be disrupted by obstacles, which can affect sound quality and lead to unstable connections – the average range is eight to ten meters, ideally up to 15 meters.

If you use your headphones not only for listening to music but also for making calls, pay attention to an integrated, high-quality microphone when purchasing.
